  1. Vice President Leni Robredo’s lawyer believes that the election protest filed by former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is “essentially” dead. Lawyer Romulo Macalintal disclosed at a press briefing on Wednesday that an eight-page supplemental manifestation was filed before the Supreme Court (SC), sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), which states that “Marcos did not make a substantial recovery from his pilot provinces for his protest to continue.” “Essentially, this is game over for Marcos as he failed to make substantial recovery from the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Oriental and Camarines Sur,” Macalintal said. “Marcos needs to obtain substantial recovery in his designated pilot provinces before recount could proceed in other areas that he questioned in his election protest,” the lawyer noted. Based on present recount tally as well as the history of previous electoral protests, Marcos’ protest is dead, Macalintal concluded, saying were no radical differences that could influence the final results. Marcos’ lawyer Vic Rodriguez said Macalintal’s statements are nothing but a “drive to earn media mileage” for his senatorial bid in the coming mid-term polls next May. “Nakakaawa naman si Macalintal. As an officer of the court, it is clear to me that only the PET can determine whether we have sufficiently established our case to warrant the continuation of the manual recount and judicial revision,” Rodriguez said The election lawyer noted that the Vice President actually gained additional votes from ballots with less than 20 percent threshold after the recount and re-appreciation, which could even increase her previous winning margin of 263,473 votes. On Tuesday, legal counsels of both camps said the SC has indefinitely suspended the revision proceedings of Marcos’ electoral protest case against Robredo. The High Tribunal said the initial stage of the manual recount of ballots has been completed, citing the respective positions taken by Marcos and Robredo’s lawyers. “The revision proceedings for the remaining ballot boxes and decrypted ballot images will continue on January 28, 2019. In the interim, the Tribunal shall prepare for the use of decrypted ballot images in the revision proceedings,” the SC said. The suspended revision proceedings would have no effect on the process as a whole, according to Robredo’s lawyer. I don't see any impact on the ongoing revision or recount. Sabi naman nila we will be advised kung kailan magpapatuloy ‘yung recount. But I don’t think magkakaroon pa ng recount dahil tapos na nga ‘yung pagrerecount,” Macalintal said. “Ang tinitingnan na lang nila ay ‘yung mga ballot images of the ballots which were not previously counted. I think it only involves 120 clustered precincts,” he added. Marcos lost to Robredo by 263,473 votes in the May 2016 national election—which the former senator claimed was marred by fraud. 2. Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Wednesday admitted that she pushed for the approval of the bill seeking to lower the age of criminal responsibility because it is what President Rodrigo Duterte wants. In an ambush interview with reporters, Arroyo candidly said that she supported the controversial measure because it is the will of the President. "Because the President wants it. From the beginning I said that my agenda is the President's agenda," she said. Under House Bill 8858, which the Committee on Justice approved on Monday, a child nine years old and below at the time of the commission of offense would be exempted from criminal liability. Meanwhile, those above nine years old but under 18 years old would be exempted from criminal liability unless the minor acted with discernment. Arroyo, however, is not very particular on what the minimum age of criminal responsibility should be. "To me, whatever the Congress will eventually come up with. I dictate on deadlines, I don't dictate on substance," she said. "Let the legislative process determine that," Arroyo added. Currently, House Bill 8858 is undergoing the period of interpellation at the plenary. House justice panel chair Salvador Leachon is hoping that the measure will be enacted into law before the 17th Congress ends in June this year. 4. 5. Manny Pacquiao (black trunks) and Adrien Broner (purple/silver trunks) box during a WBA welterweight world title boxing match at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports/Reuters (UPDATED) Filipino ring legend Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao added another chapter to his legendary professional boxing career. The fighting senator from the Philippines retained his World Boxing Association world welterweight belt by outpointing American challenger Adrien Broner in their showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday in Manila). Judges scored the bout 117-111, 116-112, and 116-112, giving the 40-year-old Pacquiao the victory via unanimous decision. Broner, nicknamed "The Problem," provided little trouble for Pacquiao as the Filipino champion landed a steady stream of left hands that repeatedly rocked the American and pushed him against the ropes. The challenger, in contrast, barely landed punches and was loudly booed by the Las Vegas crowd in the 11th round as he danced away from the "Pacman." Filipino ring legend Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao added another chapter to his legendary professional boxing career. Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports/Reuters "I feel so happy, because I did my best in the fight and also in training," said Pacquiao after the bout. "We did a lot in training camp, so thank God for this victory." After a slow first round, Pacquiao found his rhythm in the second round and kept the pressure on Broner all throughout. The Filipino star landed a huge left hand that stunned Broner in the seventh, forcing the American to the ropes where he could only cover up as Pacquiao teed off. Broner was forced to clinch several times in that round, even as Pacquiao landed a flurry of shots. Both fighters were fairly inactive in the eighth round before Pacquiao again got Broner in trouble in the ninth, landing a massive left straight that had the challenger staggering backwards. Forced once again to the ropes, Broner absorbed punishment from Pacquiao before managing to circle out of trouble. Pacquiao, displaying tremendous savvy, kept pressing the action in the final three rounds but Broner only repeatedly danced out of danger, much to the dismay of the sold-out crowd at MGM Grand. "I wanted to push more," Pacquiao said when asked if he was trying for a knockout. "But my trainer Buboy (Fernandez) said that do not be careless, just take your time." This was Pacquiao's first defense of the regular WBA title that he won last July 2018 after stopping Argentina's Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. With the triumph, the Filipino ring legend improved his professional boxing record to 61 wins, 7 losses, and 2 draws. Broner, 11 years younger than Pacquiao, dropped to 33-4-1, 1 NC. Pacquiao has now won back-to-back bouts since a controversial loss to Australia's Jeff Horn in July 2017, and the only 8-division world champion in boxing history maintained that his career was far from over. "I really don't believe that my career is over. I proved it in my last fight, and now I proved it again at the age of 40. Manny Pacquiao's journey still continues," he said. Whether that journey includes another big-money showdown with American superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains to be seen, however. Mayweather was among the 13,000-strong crowd at the venue on fight night, and Pacquiao expressed his gratitude to Mayweather Promotions for helping in organizing the Broner match. When asked about a Mayweather rematch, Pacquiao just said: "Tell him to come back to the ring, and we will fight." Mayweather has not fought a sanctioned match since stopping Conor McGregor in August 2017; his bout against Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year's Eve was billed as an exhibition. Broner, meanwhile, was irate at the result and insisted he was the rightful winner. "I beat him. Everybody out there knows I beat him. I controlled the fight. He was missing. I hit him clean more times. I beat him," he declared in a profanity-laced interview. According to CompuBox, Broner landed less than ten punches in each of the first 11 rounds of the fight.

15. Malacañang will be asking some government agencies and a private firm to explain the data breach controversy hounding the passport renewal system of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said Monday his office will be sending letters to the DFA, Presidential Communications Operations Office, which supervises the printing firm APO Production Unit Inc., and the United Graphic Expression Corporation (UGEC). Panelo made the statement after former Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay said the previous contractor, Francois-Charles Oberthur Fiduciare, could not have stolen the data because Oberthur had already finished its contractual obligations when APO and UGEC came in during the Aquino administration. It was DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. himself who revealed last week that a previously outsourced passport maker took off with all the applicants' data when its contract with the government was terminated. "Right now it appears that somebody is claiming that a foreign company was contracted, a foreign company did this and did that. Puro nga claim eh. I haven't seen the documents. They have to show me documents that will validate what they're saying. Until such time mahirap mag-komentaryo," Panelo, who is also the presidential spokesperson, said at a news conference. Panelo said his office will conduct its own probe as soon as they receive the documents from the entities concerned. "We will make a definitive conclusion or findings once those documents are submitted to us," he said, adding the government can demand return of passport data if allegations of theft are true. The National Privacy Commission is already looking into the issue. Panelo also assured the public that the government will not allow delay in the issuance of passports or stringent requirements "that will burden our people" following the DFA's pronouncement that applicants for passport renewal should submit original copies of their birth certificate as a result of the data loss. “Applicants should not be burdened by submitting original copies of their certificates of live birth, obtaining which requires another application process before the Philippine Statistics Authority, to renew their passports just because the producer lost their relevant data,” Panelo said in a separate statement. Panelo said the submission of the old or current passport which the applicant seeks to renew “should suffice for the purpose.” Link: [Hidden Content] Courtesy of By VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News
Link: [Hidden Content] Courtesy of FRJ, GMA News
  17. MANILA -- Projection mapping is a technology that gives “life” to inanimate objects through digital projections. An example of this are those videos showing building facades that are seemingly changing their shape and design but are actually just three-dimensional (3D) projections. Imagine that on a dining table. Bright and colorful imagery brings life to a plain white table. A cartoon character moving around and preparing the meal on one's plate. Then a server puts down the actual dish, to get a taste of the real food. That's what Six Doors 3D BBQ Buffet restaurant recently introduced to the local market. The buffet restaurant features six themed VIP rooms that offer this unique dining experience. At P4,500 per head, guests get to experience an eight-course visual feast like no other. Aside from the table mapping, the walls of each room has projections of different locales as well. The images transport the guests to different countries, reflecting the origins of the dishes. “There's a lot of buffet restaurants already but this is the first of its kind in terms of the table mapping projection. That's the first in the country,” explained Khristina Sandoval, marketing manager of Kungfu Master Cooking Group. Located at the second floor of Uptown Mall of Uptown Bonifacio in taguig City, the restaurant offers this kind of experience to differentiate itself from the many buffet restaurants in Metro Manila. This is the first buffet restaurant for the company, which also operates Singaporean brand Olivia & Co. “The VIP rooms offer an eight-course surprise menu. Two of the courses (first and last) would be the one that have the table mapping projection. In between those two courses, each course represents the city included in the 'magical train' like Seoul, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro,” she said. The rooms use around four to six projectors. The rooms are all white except for the chairs. The table and plates also use a different shade of white for the 3D projection mapping to work. The table mapping is exclusive to the VIP rooms but the 3D technology extends to the main dining room. An interactive aquarium is displayed at the stage area where kids can interact with the projections. MASSIVE SPACE The whole restaurant occupies a massive space inside the mall. It can accommodate up to 344 guests at a time. This includes two function rooms and the six VIP rooms. And each table has its own smokeless grill where guests can cook their own barbecue dishes. It has a cold station where cold seafood, salad, and fruits are situated; the fresh station for the raw meat for grilling; prepared dishes section; sushi bar; beverage bar; dimsum station; and many more. But a unique offering is the Brazilian churrasco barbecue served right on the table. “Apart from the usual buffet fare we serve churrasco, Brazilian BBQ and we serve it the traditional way. We have our serves come out from the kitchen carrying these huge skewers and they walk around and slice the freshly cooked barbecued meat right in front of you,” Sandoval said. The restaurant carries more than 300 items in its buffet which also includes the Indian flying cake. It's a crepe-like dish that is filled with either banana, butter and cheese, and sausage. Its regular buffet rates is P859 for weekday lunch and P1,390 for weekday dinner, weekend lunch and dinner, and holidays. But to attract the office crowd in the area, the restaurant also offers a one hour buffet for only P499. Birthday promos are also available including the 3+1 birthday month promo (three paying guests plus one free) and 1+1 birthday/date promo (one paying guest plus one free). 20. "Anak, I love you, anak. Anak, mahal kita.

Link: [Hidden Content] Courtesy of ABS-CBN News
  22. MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday appealed to politicians to "let the people vote freely" and avoid resorting to violence in the upcoming midterm elections in May. Speaking in Tagaytay City, Duterte said he was even willing to help out politicians who have poor chances at victory, adding that he would not align with a particular party. "Itong mga pulitiko (To politicians), I’m just appealing to you to let the people vote freely. Wala lang tayong (We should not have) terrorism," Duterte said in a speech in Tagaytay City, where he campaigned for the senatorial bid of his former political adviser, Francis Tolentino. Takutan na lang pero 'wag mong totohanan," said the President, chair of the ruling PDP-Laban party. (If you're a losing candidate, don't terrorize [your opponent]. Call me, I will campaign for you. I have no party. I'll just say that if you don't win, I'll kill them all. Just to scare them, but don't make it real.) The President's statement came in the wake of AKO Bicol Partylist Rep. Rodel Batocabe's slay, who was planning to challenge reelectionist mayor Carlwyn Baldo for the Daraga mayoralty in May. 23. Although minor siya but still yung ginawa niya is serious and dapat aksyonan agad.
