  1. MANILA—Ateneo de Manila University should have waited until the holidays were over before it dismissed the junior high school student caught bullying his classmate, human rights lawyer and advocate Rene Saguisag said. In an opinion column published online by Inquirer.net on Sunday, Saguisag said the Jesuit-run school was "bullied and panicked to announce the right thing at the wrong time." The former senator noted that even the Allies and the Germans observed a truce on Christmas Eve and even sang carols and played football in the middle of World War I. "What Ateneo has done may have satisfied the high feelings of the moment, but in the sober afterglow may come the realization that its timing was questionable, to paraphrase Catholic Justice Frank Murphy, a staunch human rights advocate," he wrote. In an earlier column published by the Manila Times, Saguisag said he would have preferred Ateneo to take the matter "under advisement in the spirit of the season of grace and goodwill" and not heed the cries to “crucify him, crucify him.” "Christmas was pushed into irrelevance at a trying time. Ateneo was tested, and from where I humbly sit found wanting. If the Yuletide spirit does not work there at this time, then when and where?," he said. Bullying the bully, he said, is akin to raping the rapist: "Disproportionate, not fitting the offense." Instead, Saguisag believes the bully, caught on camera using his taekwondo skills to hurt his fellow student, should be given a second chance. "In punishment, there must be equivalence or proportionality and the possibility of change and subjective growth. I have benefited from forgiveness for my many failings," he wrote. SILENT DIGONG? In both of his writings, Saguisag noted that President Rodrigo Duterte was visibly silent about the issue when he was "usually quick to comment on most anything and condemn." Duterte, he recalled, skipped graduation rites at the San Beda Law School after standing investigation for shooting classmate Octavio Goco, who had taunted him as a "promdi" (from the province). Saguisag, who "virtually ran the law school" then, had said he regrets not expelling Duterte at that time. "I suppose given his own colorful past. It would have been weird if he had condemned it. He may not be a bully, perhaps in the sense that he may be a Nike 'Just Do It' poster boy," wrote the human rights lawyer. If the 14-year-old dismissed Ateneo student becomes president some day, Saguisag noted that he would be the third Atenean after Duterte and current Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, in conflict with the law or school norms, to attain the country’s highest elective post. Yet, he wrote, if the boy reforms and becomes president some day, "he might yet understand the reason for the season of grace and goodwill." "He is learning that in life, when you laugh, the whole world laughs with you, but you weep alone," said Saguisag. Link: [Hidden Content] Courtesy of ABS-CBN News

  3. In a recent Ask Away episode, Feng Shui adviser Johnson Chua said those born in the Years of the Rabbit, Monkey and Rat will be the luckiest Chinese zodiac signs in the coming 2019, Year of the Earth Pig. Johnson said the Year of the Rabbit (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011) will be the luckiest among all of the big three because "ang Rabbit kaibigan ng Pig so that's number one. If kaibigan mo ang taon, you will get a lot of friends." He said through these friends, their network and their connections, Rabbits will become luckier. "Alam nga natin that 'no man is an island' so your luck is also from your connections, your network, you can gain your wisdom." Besides, the Heaven Star will also fly into the Rabbit's palace. "When you say Heaven Star, may guardian support sila. May mga helpful people na puwedeng tumulong sa kanila," he said. Johnson said "whatever the Rabbit wishes for in 2019, puwede matupad. That's how powerful they are." Despite having a problematic star, those born in the Year of the Monkey (1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004) are still considered among the luckiest this year "because there are three more good stars na mag-su-support sa Monkey." Johnson said the Year of the Monkey has the fortune virtue which can effortlessly bring the Monkey luck. "Meron siya 'yong tinatawag natin na fortune virtue, so ibig sabihin kahit wala pa siyang ginagawa, 'yong biyaya pumapasok na sa kanya," he said. He reminded Monkeys to take care of opportunities given to them this year. "So paano magiging bad luck 'yon 'pag pumasok sa kanaya at hindi niya inasikaso puwede lang din siyang mawala," he said. Instead of depending on lucky, Johnson said Monkeys should take action of what is given to them, so they can properly handle and maintain it. Although they have lucky stars shining on them, Monkeys should still be keeping an eye out for their health and financial management. "Ang problem lang naman ng Monkey for the coming year, 'yong health babantayan nila kasi weak. But when it comes to the three good things — they have good fortune, they have good food and they have good friends that could support to them, that's what fortune virtue promises then also meron din silang helpful people that could support them." Finally, those born in the Year of the Rat (1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008), will experience 2019 to be a year of growth and opportunities. "Ang maganda naman sa Year of the Rat, mag-e-expand 'yong kanilang knowledge and wisdom, so maraming opportunities for learning, experience, skills," he said. It will also be a good career year for the Ratties, with them gaining more knowledge and experiences, "So for me kasi knowledge is one of, puwede mong sabihing strength so adding up to your knowledge, adding up your experience, dagdag 'yon sa skills and profession." According to Johnson, people with the Chinese zodiac sign of Year of the Rat are known as problem solvers, "ibig sabihin pag tumaas pa ang kanilang knowledge mas marami pa silang puwedeng hawakan. Kaya super ganda para sa mga Year of the Rat." Johnson said this is the best year for creativity and knowledge for the Year of the Rat but he reminded that "the most important knowledge only becomes the power if you take action." How about those born in the Year of the Pig? The Feng Shui adviser said having the same zodiac sign as the coming year does not equate to a luck. 'Di ba minsan, puwedeng yes lucky because of recognition. Pero minsan, it can be malas kas ikaw ang usapin. Ikaw 'yong nakikita," Johnson said. Johnson said, Year of the Pig is known for having the lack of emotional strength and being easily influenced by the people around them. "The total ban cannot be executed cavalierly without the benefit of identifying alternative livelihood activities or programs... for people who will be displaced because of the ban," paliwanag ni Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
